Senior Michael Gergen celebrates with Mike Montgomery and Jack Connolly, after he scored the fifth out of six goals during last Sunday's game against Lakehead University. Their next game is on Oct. 10 against Lake Superior State in Marie, Mich.

The Bulldogs took on Lakehead University last Sunday night at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC).

Just 2:17 into the game, junior Jordan Fulton took advantage of the power play and scored on a pass from sophomore forward Rob Bordson to net the first Bulldog goal of the season.

The scoring didn't stop there, with sophomores Kyle Schmidt and Justin Fontaine netting their first goals and senior co-captain Matt Greer also adding his first point of the season; the Bulldogs were up 4-0 at intermission.

"We played a good first 20 minutes," said head coach Scott Sandelin.

He also added that with the new system of refereeing, there were more penalties and not a lot of flow, and that it'll take some time to get used to the system.

In the second, UMD added another goal, this time by senior Michael Gergen at 14:55 in the period, according to the UMD Web site.

The dogs had a solid 5-0 lead going into intermission.

Greer added his second goal of the night at about the midway point in the third and solidified the UMD shutout and win.

"With it being the first game, we were trying to get all the guys in and we saw a lot of good things," Sandelin said.

Junior goalie Alex Stalock agrees.

"We used this game as a chance to work on things, we didn't focus on them and how they play; we focused on us," he said.

The Bulldogs start off the year with this win at home and will now move on to play Lake Superior State on Friday, Oct. 10. The game in Michigan is set to start at 6:05 p.m.
