The UMD soccer team hosted Upper Iowa University and No. 3 ranked Winona State last weekend on Griggs Field.

Friday's game was controlled entirely by the Dogs; they out shot Upper Iowa University, 19-8, according to the UMD Web site.

"We controlled the match," said head coach Greg Cane. "We had more scoring opportunities, we were patient and that got us our quality chances."

The quality chances really paid off as 3:24 into the overtime period junior forward Alex Paffrath netted the game-winning goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson also recorded her secondstraight shutout to maintain their home streak, according to the UMD Web site.

"Tight games are typical of the conference," said Cane. "There's going to be a lot of ties and one goal games, that's how close the conference is."

Sunday's game was a match against No. 3 ranked Winona State and was yet another close game for UMD.

The Lady Dogs controlled the first half again, and the game was still tied at 0-0 at halftime.

"We were confident going into halftime, but no matter how confident we were, we still needed to come out and maintain it in the second half," said Cane.

In the second half, one mistake was all it took for Winona to capitalize.

The Warriors headed in a rebound shot to get the 1-0 lead.

UMD had a couple scoring attempts, but were unable to put one past the Winona goalie.

The Bulldogs will take on St. Cloud next Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. to try to regain some momentum after a tough conference loss.
